There are four Super Mario Bros. Advance games on the Game Boy Advance; but according to the latest Iwata Asks, a fifth was planned as well.
According to producer Hiroyuki Kimura, New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS was originally conceived as Super Mario Advance 5.
“I was working on all four installments in the Super Mario Advance series, and I personally thought New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS would work well as “5” in that series,” Kimura said.
