Ouya, the popular game console manufacturer is at it again with what appears to be a follow through on promised new Android powered gaming devices. Announcements of Ouya 2.0 are already in the works and is geared up for a release to the masses some time next year. In addition, the company is in favor of updating the look of their consoles with a whole new design leaving previous models behind. CEO Julie Urman made the following statement to further corroborate:

Our plan is to have Ouya 2.0 sometime next year, we haven’t finalized the date of that. We’re still determining what exactly we want that to be. For the hardware, we are looking at different chips. We are looking at what type of performance we want.

If the last sentence in that statement means anything, it appears that we’ll see something we’re not really used to seeing in the industry, “chip hopping”. It sounds as though the company may look beyond the Tegra 4 chipset they’re used to implementing and looking at other options for the “type of performance we want“.  Is it possible they could integrate a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU for Ouya 2.0? It’ll certainly be interesting to find out, and as always only time will tell. Here’s to hoping this doesn’t effect dev’s who’ve spent a great deal of time developing around the Tegra 4 construct.

This also begs another question. What will happen to backwards compatibility should they move forward with another chip maker? As for the decision to implement new hardware, it appears that the response stemmed from feedback the company received from current Ouya owners who pointed at some of the shortcomings during testing. We’ll be sure to let you know when the arrival of the new hardware hits in 2014, so stick around. Feel free to drop a comment or two below in the comments section.
