It should come as no surprise, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made the news official during his GDC keynote today: A new Mario game is in development for the 3DS, and it’ll be in 3D, natch.
The game is being worked on by the Super Mario Galaxy development team. Iwata mentioned how, since the series went 3D with Super Mario 64, it’s been difficult for players to judge if they’re going to hit a floating block when jumping. No further information was provided — that will be coming at E3.
The logo for the game shown on screen may have offered the first detail about the game — the “o” in “Mario” had a raccoon-like tail. Could it mean a return of the Tanooki suit?
