After playing so many fighting games that have been released over the past few years, when first picking up Mortal Kombat, I figured I’d run through arcade mode, try out a few Fatalities, maybe play a handful matches online, and call it a day. That’s what you would expect with any other fighting game right?

This is what we’ve been conditioned to think fighting games are all about, and it’s kind of sad when you compare that to what’s offered by games in other genres. Without any solid competition, fighting games typically have very little to offer, and have a hard time holding the interest of casual gamers for more than a couple months at best. I personally feel this has a lot to do with the slow growth of the popularity of fighting games, and could ultimately be its demise unless some change is brought to the genre as a whole.
