Producer Lance Sloane says the movie team is trying to “sync” its release around upcoming but currently unannounced Mortal Kombat game.

A new Mortal Kombat could be in the works, with a new film for the fighting franchise looking to “sync up” with the launch of the new game.

Lance Sloane, producer of webseries Mortal Kombat Legacy, announced plans for a new Mortal Kombat movie at San Diego Comic Con 2013.

Speaking to GamerHub.TV (via CVG), Sloane said the team has “been in greenlight committee for a while at the studio and we’ve got a great script.”

“And we’ve got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen, who is on board.”

Sloane said the team is working out the best time to launch the new movie, and wants to “sync” the release with a new, currently unannounced game. “It’s just figuring out the business side of it and when we would do it and when we would launch it and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they’re working on now.”

“It’s not 100 per cent yet, but we’re getting closer every day,” concluded Sloane.

Mortal Kombat was released in 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and was released on PC earlier this month. The 2011 title was the first game in the series to be published by Warner Bros., after the publisher acquired the rights and development staff during the collapse of Midway Games.

Developer NetherRealm Studios started publicly hiring for next-gen development in April 2012..

Between Mortal Kombat titles, NetherRealm Studios has also worked on DC Comics brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us, which launched earlier in 2013.
