When I was first approached to write the review for Moero Chronicle Hyper for thedailygamepad.com, I did not know what I was to expect from the game. I was told the game was a visual novel that has Dungeon Crawler elements to it. As I have always been into Visual Novels and lately have been getting into Dungeon Crawlers; I decided that I would give the game a go. Before I begin my review, I would like to thank Compile Heart and Idea Factory International, Inc. for providing thedailygamepad.com with a Free Copy of Moero Chronicle Hyper, so that I could write this review.  It should also be noted that this is a rated Mature game and therefore is not suitable for those that are under the age for the Mature Rating.

Moero Chronicle Hyper is a single player dungeon crawler with visual novel elements or a visual novel with dungeon crawler elements depending on how you want to look at it. In Moero Chronicle Hyper there is Lotium –the realm of humans— and Monstopia –the realm of monster girls— that use to live side by side in harmony. One day, a  disturbance began, and the monster girls started to act strange and attack humans. The only way to restore peace is to defeat the Legendary Monster Girl. This is where the main character Io comes into play. Io is from Sekriend, a town that is right between Lotium and Monstopia and has been forced by the Town Elder to go into Monstopia as it is now the town’s turn to send someone into Monstopia to investigate the abnormal Monster Girls. Io, however, isn’t interested in the crisis of the world, but his own personal crisis; which is the fact that he can’t talk to girls without feeling awkward or having impure thoughts.

Going along with Io is Lilia, a monster girl who is the childhood friend of Io and from Monstopia. She really cares about Io and the humans a lot. As a monster girl, she wants to know why the other Monster girls have become different and is willing to risk herself changing to get to the bottom of it. The pair then run into Otton, a H monster who is a wandering hunter traveling with the wind. He is on the search for the holy fabrics of maiden’s wand wears of a pair of panties around his neck. Otton has no issues expressing himself and so IO uses him as a scapegoat about his own desires. The group comes across other monster girls who they must clean of the sickness they have from the disturbance, and once they have been clean, they will join the party.

In terms of controls for the game you can use the joy cons, wired controller, switch pro controller, and the touch screen can be utilized when the game is being played in handheld mode for one of the games features. I will say that the controls are a little clunky. Using the analog sticks pushes you through the dungeon fast while using the D-pad moves you one space at a time. The game does offer four different game difficulties that you can choose from. In “Easy Mode” the hit points and statuses of enemies are decreased. This, in turn, will cause your EXP and G you earn to be reduced. This mode if more so for who want to read the story and have an easier experience with gameplay. In “Normal Mode” the difficulty is standard level. If you are familiar with dungeon crawlers, then this is the mode you would like to play. The next mode is “Hard Mode” which in this mode the HP and the status of the enemies are enhanced. However, this makes the EXP and gold you earn a little more than Normal. The last mode available for the game is “Expert Mode” and as it suggests you should only play this mode if you want a real challenge. In this mode the HP and status of the enemies have been really increased, this also makes your exp and gold more fruitful, but the battles are difficult, again you should only play this mode if you are looking for a real challenge.

The game has some funny moments where it hits you with the typical clichés, but I love that. For example, when the Elder calls Io out about how he is insignificant and needs to experience things and grow up before return to the town. Another thing I liked about the game is that it is a grid-based dungeon crawler, which is a lot easier to navigate. I also like that the game is turn-based for combat instead of you just randomly fighting the creatures. I have always been a fan of turn-based combat and with more games taking the all-around combat, it’s nice to see that some games still honor the turn-based concept. Although the game has some good points there were something that was a bit confusing in the game. For example, the manual button is confusing. It doesn’t explain that there are keys you can use to get through things in the game. When you access the manual, it tells you what keys does what during gameplay. At first, I tried every command and none of them worked while in the manual menu. Once I exited out of the manual menu the commands work. Therefore, there needs to be a workaround that shows or tells the player that this is more so a guide for the controls. Another issue is that the game does not autosave. Which isn’t a bad thing because it makes you utilized and searches for save points while in the dungeon. However, If you enter a dungeon and never reach a save point you must restart the game from the beginning. It is a tad bit annoying because I would have liked to be able to save the game in town before I headed into the dungeon. Even though you can skip the dialogue it would have been much simpler to be able to save the game freely; unless you are in a dungeon then it should force you to save at a save point.

Overall, when it comes to Moero Chronicle Hyper the story is a good one and the gameplay, minus the few issues, is pretty good. Again, this is not a kid-friendly game and does have Mature Content in the game. If you are into Visual Novels and/or Dungeon Crawlers and can look past the lewdness of the game. I would recommend the game because the story is a pretty good story. One thing I would love to see in the future as a possibility for the developers to do a game where everything is reversed, and the female is the one that’s not fighting but aiding the men in battle. I think it would just be something to see, maybe an alternate universe of some sort. If you would like to play Moero Chronicle Hyper you can pick the game up for Nintendo Switch on Nintendo eShop for $19.99 USD.
