Of all the initially bizarre-looking new franchises Nintendo created for the Wii, Wii Music was probably the one that least managed to connect with consumers — but that doesn’t mean Nintendo’s given up on it. Speaking in an interview with Techland, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared to suggest that a sequel was already in development, and that Mario may yet make an appearance in it.
“There’s a lot of potential still in Wii Music, I think. Because we’re going to change it up, a new interface is coming, and all of that,” Miyamoto said. And as for Mario potentially appearing in a follow-up, Miyamoto explained that, “If we get more people to understand what’s going on in the game concept, then he might appear in the game.”
Techland then acknowledged that this seemed to be confirmation that there is another Wii Music in the works, saying, “Wow, I think that’s breaking news, then,” but Miyamoto didn’t comment any further on the subject (although he did go on to agree that Mario’s stubby fingers would make it difficult for him to be a musician).
