Keen Software House has announced that the MMO take on their space sim Miner Wars 2081 is now available for pre-sale!
Miner Wars is an upcoming 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) space simulation game. If you’re not familiar with the term “6DoF”; it just means that you’re allowed to move in almost any direction possible. Typically, most space combat games are classified as 6DoF. So far, the Miner Wars Franchise will involve two games. The first is Miner Wars 2081, which will be a regular single player game that will include co-op and some standard multiplayer modes. The MMO will be released 6 months after ’2081′, and will simply be an MMO set in that universe. The games are being developed by Keen Software House; a company staffed by ex 2K Games employees and former producers of Red Faction: Guerrilla.
The background story for the game is pretty straightforward and almost what you would expect of a futuristic space game. The year is 2081 and its been 10 years since the Earth has been destroyed. Mankind is still in the early stages of space travel and colonization, so they’ve set up in mining colonies that had been previously established. Then, war breaks out…
What makes today’s announcement interesting is that the pre-sale price is set at $19.99 USD and the developers have stated that if you pre-order at that price you can play the game for at least 2 years without having to pay any subscription fees! While the MMO has no specific release date, it has been stated that it will be released sometime on the fourth quarter of 2012.
This is also being done to see if more interest lies on the regular version of the game or the MMO. The press release stated that this will not only help them create interest in the product, but also help them hire more staff and hopefully get the game released sooner. I would suggest you check out the site, which includes a Wiki that goes further into the Miner Wars universe, and if this is something that interests you then you might want to pre-order it.
