English metal band Iron Maiden on Friday released the music video for their new song “Speed Of Light” and, somewhat unexpectedly–but amazingly–its theme is video games.

The video is an homage to video games released in the past four decades. This is no random number, as Iron Maiden celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Specifically, the video depicts the band’s famous mascot, Eddie, traveling through a warp pipe and becoming the hero of various games.

Watch and you’ll see references to franchises like Donkey Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Call of Duty.

The video was produced and directed by Llexi Leon, creator of the Eternal Descent comic book, with animation and visual effects done by The Brewery Production Company (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll).

“Speed Of Light” is featured on Iron Maiden’s upcoming album, The Book of Souls, which debuts in September. It is the band’s 18th studio album.

In other video game news about bands celebrating their 40th anniversaries, the Diablo-like RPG Victor Vran’s next expansion is themed around Motorhead.
