Although not generating any recent buzz as a leader in the mobile chip market, Intel is rattling things up a bit as Intel Korea’s CEO Lee Hee-sung came out with some comments in a recent interview about increasing aggressiveness in the mobile device field. The current target of Intel’s partnership efforts is Samsung, which has started advertising their upcoming Galaxy Tab 3 devices with Intel chips.
Intel typically is not a name that immediately comes to mind when one thinks of leading chipsets powering top-tier devices. More likely one thinks of Qualcomm, especially their upcoming Snapdragon 800, or possibly Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa chips. Even NVIDIA gets some recognition thanks to their new Tegra 4 line of chipsets and the Tegra 3 chips that preceded. With the market for PC sales continuing to shrink, companies increasingly need to be a player in the mobile chipset space. This could explain Intel’s desire to get some name recognition by being associated with one of the market’s biggest producers of devices, Samsung.
IHS iSuppli recently completed a study of the chips used in smartphones and other mobile devices and found Intel only captured 5% of the market. That is a stunningly low number when one considers their dominance in the PC industry over the years.
According to Lee, Intel representatives met with Samsung recently to discuss the possibility of getting more Intel chips into Samsung devices. Lee says, “The meeting with Samsung signifies that Intel recognizes the Korean company as one of its crucial business partners.” Perhaps more crucial will be the reception Samsung’s new line of Galaxy tablet devices receives, especially assessments of how well the chips perform.
