Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 3: Generation is a remake of the original game released on the Playstation 3 in 2012. Set in the year 1989, this action rpg’s story takes place after Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 in an alternate dimension to Gamindustri, bringing more insight to the “Console War” story arc from previous releases.
Story
The story takes place 3 years after Re:Birth 2. Gameindustri is in peace, and the lazy Neptune is sent on a quest and encounters a stranger who sends her to an alternate dimension. The year is 1989 in the alternate dimension, where the country of Planeptune is just being founded. Neptune runs into different variations of everyone that she knows as well as new comers.
Plot
Neptune is stuck in the alternate dimension unless she can increase shares, as well seeing a political war between the CPUs and a group of villains called the Seven Sages. The story contains the lightheartedness that the series is known for. You can expect a lot of parodies and references towards gaming both new and old, which will keep a smile on your face if not make you laugh each time you play the game.
Gameplay
Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 3: Generation is a mixture between a turn-based and action RPG. The game uses the same engine as the previous games, so you can expect to be spending time questing, fighting mobs, traveling dungeons, and using materials to make plans, as well as advancing through the main story to unlock new content. There are some new elements in this entry of the series like the new dungeons, enemy types, and changes to the SP and EXE systems. The EXE drive gauge is gone and all specials moves cost SP, which is limited to 1,000.
The battle system remains mostly unchanged. Like previous titles you will fight in a 3D arena where you will have free movement and setup your attacks based on where you position yourself with the enemies. One note is that on the PC you will want to use a controller. Playing with the keyboard and mouse is a bit of a pain. It was a hassle to work with the menus to remap the keyboard and have the game accept the changes.
Presentation
The graphics have been improved from the Rebirth 2. There are still some jaggies to be seen, however you can tell that the models have been touched up. The frame rate is also improved compared ro Rebirth 2. This is most noticeable in the menus and in dungeons. Although the graphics have been improved though there are still some lag issues and frame rate drops when you battle certain enemies and in some dungeons. The voiceovers don’t always match the text that pops up on screen, and in some cases the voiceovers will note say the everything in the on screen text.
In Conclusion
Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 3: Generation is a true to form remake of Victory and with its few faults, has improved on many things from the previous entries in the series. The voiceovers and keyboard mapping needs help, as well as the lag and frame rate issues. If you can push past this you will find a cute, humorous RPG that will keep you entertained as well as challenge you for hours.
