As you might already know, if you are in Google Now on your Android phone, you can simply say “Okay Google” to start the next search. The Google Experience Launcher takes this one step further by adding this hotword to your home screens so you don’t have to tap on the microphone in the Google Search box in order to start a search. You can simply say, “Okay Google” followed by whatever it is you want to search for. This feature is on by default, but if for whatever reason, you want to turn it off, it’s very easy to do. Hit the break to get started.
Just long press on any home screen and tap on Settings. Then tap on Voice and uncheck “Hotword detection.” Now you would think this would only turn it off for your home screens and not in Google Now, but unfortunately this is not the case. “Okay Google” will be disabled for both your home screens and within Google Now. You will now see that the Google Search widget microphone on your home screens is shaded in grey and the microphone in Google Now is shaded in white.
Homescreen widget – On
Homescreen widget – Off
Google Now – On
Google Now – Off
Now if your phone doesn’t have the Google Experience Launcher, you can still turn off “Okay Google” for Google Now. Just tap on the microphone from the Google Search widget or in Google Now, then tap on the three dot menu key at the bottom right. The rest of the instructions are the same: tap on Voice then uncheck “Hotword detection.”
Here’s a quick video showing you how it works.
