Buying a new phone can be both exciting and frustrating at the same time. The frustration comes from trying to move data from your old phone to your new phone. Remember the old days, when you had a feature phone? It was only a matter of moving over your contacts, and your carrier usually did that for you. It’s a different ballgame now as our smartphones have apps, text messages, photos, music, videos, settings, dictionaries, and so on. The idea of restoring all that data on a new phone can be so daunting that it might force you to avoid buying that shiny new phone.

Well My Backup Pro has come to the rescue with their new Migrate feature. I already reviewed My Backup Pro, and highly recommend it for many reasons, but I wanted to tell you about the new migrate feature that simply moves data from one phone to another via WiFi. No fumbling with SD cards or moving files from your old phone to your computer and back to your new phone. Basically no fuss, no mess. Hit the break to get started.

Before we jump in, My Backup Pro has a lot of cool features for backing up your data, but this guide is only going to concentrate on the Migrate feature. To learn more about what else My Backup Pro can do for you, click here.

To get started, all you need to do is purchase and download My Backup Pro in the Google Play Store ($4.99). By purchasing it once, you will be able to install it on as many devices as you wish. In this case, you need to install it on your old phone and your new phone. Note: there is a trial version of My Backup Pro available, but it doesn’t include the Migrate feature.

Make sure both your OLD and NEW phones are connected to the same Wi-Fi network!!

You can start by opening the app on your NEW phone. You will see an option to setup an account for cloud backups. You don’t need to worry about that now, but if you think you want to utilize some of the other aspects of My Backup Pro, then go ahead and create an account. By doing so, you will be able to backup your phone’s data in the cloud in case you ever lose it or it gets stolen.

Once you get to the main menu, tap on Migrate. You will then see a popup showing you two choices: “Send from this device to another” or “Receive to this device from another.” Since this is your NEW phone, you want to select “Receive to this device from another.” You will then see a popup saying “Waiting for Sender”.

Now you can put your NEW phone down and pick up your OLD phone.

On your OLD phone, open My Backup Pro and at the main menu, select Migrate. Since this is your OLD phone, you want to select, “Send from this device to another.”

You can now choose “Applications & Media” or “Data.”

Data” will include Contacts, Call Logs, Bookmarks, SMS, MMS, System Settings, Android Home, Alarms, Dictionary, Calendar, Music Playlist, and APNs. The good news is that you can select what you want to copy to your new phone by checking the individual categories. If you do want to send everything over, just tap “select all” at the bottom. “Applications & Data” consists of your Apps (and app data if you’re rooted), Photos, Music, and Videos. You are given the chance to select all from each individual category or select individual files from within each category.

Once you have selected what you want copied, My Backup Pro will automatically find your New phone (assuming it’s on the same Wi-Fi network) and transfer the data over. After it’s completed, you will get a message saying you need to restart your phone in order to see all your data. I would suggest you do it, but on the Galaxy S 4 I tested it with, it wasn’t necessary.

That is all there is to it. Now you don’t have to dread moving your data over to your shiny new phone. Like I said, no fuss, no mess. You will also save an awful lot of time, and I hope this guide helped ease the pain of buying your new phone.

If you’re new to My Backup Pro, I encourage you to check out our previous review and utilize the app for many of it’s other features.

If you’re still not sure how Migrate works, I take you through each and every step of the way in the tutorial video below. Check it out.
