Super Mario 3

The Smithsonian today announced which games will be a part of its upcoming exhibition on the art of videogames. Gamers were asked earlier this year to vote on games from several different eras that they wanted to see on display, with the results being formally revealed earlier today.

80 games in total were selected from the five eras. Most of the industry’s significant game consoles were represented from ColecoVision up through Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Some of the noteworthy choices included the selections for NES action game (Super Mario 3 beating out Metroid and Mega Man 2), SNES adventure (Zelda: A Link to the Past over Chrono Trigger and Earthbound), and N64 adventure (Zelda: Ocarina of Time over Majora’s Mask and Paper Mario).

In addition to the games that were voted on, one of the most significant games from each of the five eras was automatically chosen: Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, and World of Warcraft.
