Southwest Ad

Google is known for constantly coming up with new ways to implement advertising into their products. After all, they are a search engine that thrives on ad revenue. If they weren’t constantly improving or changing things up, things would get old pretty fast, and the Google brand would eventually die out as other search engines gained market share.

This time, it looks like Google is starting to experiment a bit with giant banner advertisements that show up when users search keywords associated with brands.

The test was discovered by digital marketing company Synrgy after they searched for “Southwest Airlines.” (Seen above.)

As you can see, the result was a massive banner ad similar to a Facebook cover photo. Although these new banner ads aren’t fully implemented yet and available to Adwords users, expect them to be soon enough, as long as Google’s test are positive.

There’s no doubt that the new “cover photo-like” ads will bring more attention to the associated brand, thereby driving more traffic to its website, but other search results will be pushed down the page and will have a harder time getting clicked on. This could be another tough loss for small businesses in the SEO department…

Some, especially within the Android community, will start to worry about the effect these banner ads would have on mobile search results. It would surely affect page loading time, and of course annoy users by getting in the way of important information they actually need. It could look aesthetically nice, but people using Google on the go are usually looking for fast answers, not casually browsing the web for nice pictures of gigantic jetliners.
