According to some recent rumors, Google may be working a wireless streaming device called a Chromekey. Originally, the device was supposed to be shown off at Google I/O, but as we all know, Google wanted to focus on services, not hardware. Now that I/O is over, though, we may soon see the wireless streaming dongle.
Supposedly, the Chromekey will attach to an HDMI port on your television and allow you to stream content from Google Chrome or your Android device to your TV screen. The Chromekey also connects to a USB power adapter and your WiFi network for power and streaming. You can “cast” content from your device to your big television screen, such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Plus, you know it would have some heavy Google Play integration, especially with the movies and TV shows. Some apps can also have the cast functionality built into them, so you can enjoy Angry Birds on your 55 inch LED TV.
The rumors say that the Chromekey will be available directly through Google Play for $35, but you can also purchase it from Best Buy in stores and online, as well as Amazon. Unfortunately, they don’t say “when” it will be available, but at least you’ll know where you can get one.
The one thing the Chromekey doesn’t have much of is processing power, but as a streaming device, it doesn’t really need it. It will come with a single core processor, 512 MB of RAM, and 2 GB of internal storage. It certainly won’t run any high end games by itself, but as an extension device it’s plenty powerful.
