The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for this year’s Video Game Writing award, and among them are the brutally violent God of War 3 and the satirically dystopic Fallout: New Vegas.

Rounding out the list of six nominees are Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Singularity, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (the second year in a row an Assassin’s Creed game was nominated, as Assassin’s Creed 2 received a nod last year).

But where, we hear you asking, is Mass Effect 2? Or Red Dead Redemption? The answer may lie in the WGA’s rules for nominations. To be considered for the award, a game must have separate writing credits, and the writers also have to be members of the WGA (or applied to become members upon submitted a game’s script for consideration). The group makes no qualms about using the award “to encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, to improve the status of writers, and to encourage uniform standards within the gaming industry.”
