Before I begin my review of Gensou Skydrift, I would like to thank the developer and publisher for providing The Daily Gamepad with a free copy of Gensou Skydrift for free to play on stream, as well as for writing this review.

Gensou Skydrift is a racing game that takes place in the Touhou Project universe. Which is known for their bullet hells games. So when the idea of a racing game set in the Touhou Project was brought to my attention, I will admit that I thought it was a bit strange. However, I went into the game with an open mind and an open heart, I am glad that I did because you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, because believe it or not Gensou Skydrift is a pretty solid racing game.

In the game, you play as characters that span the series in a tag team racing format, equipped with magical cards and interesting race tracks. I enjoyed the tracks, even though it didn’t seem to be a lot of tracks available the tracks were still a lot of fun and some of the one’s that I played had some difficult to it, but still a racing game wouldn’t be complete without some type of difficult track.

When it came to the controls, I want to say how happy I was to find out that the controls for the game were so smooth. In fact, it has been quite a long time since I last played a racing game who controls weren’t so complicated and moved this smooth and having smooth controls in a racing game, makes the game even more enjoyable.

The game does offer multiple modes such as a Campaign Mode – which explains why the girls are racing. A Versus mode which you can be local or online and a free run which allows for you to practice the tracks of the game.

If there is one thing I didn’t like with the game, it would be that their weren’t very many tracks and so I would love to see more tracks in the future, unless they open up as you go through campaign mode. Otherwise, Gensou Skydrift again is a pretty solid racer that can be enjoyed by not only fans of the Touhou Project series but racing game fans alike.

If you would like to play Gensou Skydrift for yourself you can do so on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 for the price of $23.99 USD.
