Sci-fi shooter Destiny will be getting its third expansion The Taken King next month, which will add three new subclasses. In an interview with Game Informer, senior designer Sage Merrill revealed that some of the new subclasses began with a completely different concept to where they ended up.
Bungie had initially planned for the Warlock’s new ability to revolve around necromancy, allowing the player to resurrect fallen enemies as minions under their direction. This was scrapped in favour of the Stormcaller’s abilities, which revolve around lightning attacks.
The necromancer idea isn’t completely dead though, as the developer hopes to return to it “at some point.” Merrill also revealed that the team had originally planned a fourth class for Destiny that was cut prior to release because it “felt like it was encroaching on what the other classes did.” Additionally, the report revealed that the new subclasses were being developed by the studio as early as the last year when the game was first released.
The Taken King expansion will launch on September 15 and introduce some major changes to the game’s in-game quests and bounties. Players can also expect a host of new weapons, skins, and armor pieces. Players who want to jump straight into the new content after an extended hiatus will be glad to know that the expansion includes a level boost.
