A few days ago we reported on rumors that Motorola may be the next manufacturer of a Nexus smartphone. Chinese site MyDrivers.com has shifted the focus back to LG as the company tagged to produce the Nexus 5 with a report today indicating the device may be based on the LG G2. There are expected to be some differences though as word is Google will want to keep the price point close to, if not the same as, the Nexus 4, selling for $299 off contract. This rumor has surfaced despite LG’s previous denials that it is working on a new Nexus smartphone.
To keep the price from getting out of hand, sources think LG would swap out the Snapdragon 800 processor in favor of a Snapdragon 600 quad-core cpu. That move should be enough meet Google’s pricing requirements while keeping a full 1080p HD screen of at least 5 inches.
Another issue with a device based on the LG G2 might be the buttons on the back of the device. Google seems to have a bias to devices that draw their beauty from their simplicity of design. The buttons do not seem to fit in with that “clean” mentality, so it remains to be seen how LG might address that if they are in fact the manufacturer of the Nexus 5.
MyDrivers.com pegs the release date for the Nexus 5 as some time in October. Given the rumored release of Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie as some time before the end of the year, it seems industry watchers need to be prepared to see the number “5″ getting used heavily in the coming months.
