Remember the freakier parts of either FEAR or FEAR 2: Project Origin? Such as the moments where you suddenly find yourself standing on a hill while hearing some creepy nursery rhyme, or when you see the hallway just get filled with blood in the first game. Well, for FEAR 3, not only do those moments receive a specific name, the “Almaverse,” but they also become a new gameplay element.
As a quick reminder of the storyline for FEAR 3: series regular Alma (the creepy little girl who then becomes a creepy woman for FEAR 2) is actually pregnant, and the player, as original FEAR protagonist The Point Man (and also FEAR villain Paxton Fettel when playing co-op), makes his way through the campaign to intercept Alma and her new child. In previous titles, Alma would use her abilities to subject the player to experience weird events from her perspective — hence the bizarre scenes such as being instantly whisked from a haunted school onto a creepy hill with Alma waiting for you on the swingset. Because she’s in labor, she doesn’t have as much control over her abilities, and these moments become more like random events that mess with gameplay (in addition to being weird and creepy story-wise).
