“WoW was the first real MMO”
“This game copied WoW”
“WoW kicks ass compared to this game”
You see it in every MMO. People who feel the need to tell us their opinion. Now, this has been happening for years. It’s nothing new. I just wonder why people say these things?
Did World of Warcraft invent the MMO scene? Fact is, no it didn’t. Many MMO’s came before WoW, and truthfully, WoW took many things from those MMO’s and simply made them much better. Many games have tried to take a different approach from the tried and true method, but they failed miserably. Games such as Final Fantasy 14, and All Points Bulletin are just a couple names.
However, everyone today seems to say that every game is a WoW clone. Well, if that’s the case, isn’t WoW a Everquest clone? It has many of the same elements, and Everquest was around about a decade before. I am in no way hating on Blizzard. They made one great game. It’s the fanboys who constantly try to make it out to be the greatest game of all time that irk me.
MMO’s today have evolved beyond Everquest, beyond World of Warcraft. Don’t agree? I made a short list of games you should check out if you are into WoW and want a new experience:
- Rift: This is the current popular alternative to Warcraft, and for good reason. While combining what made WoW great, this title has also added many things that change the entire game. Random open world invasions happen, that if you do not defend from, you cannot quest, and the monsters will invade the towns. While this happens, you also have to defend yourself from the normal monsters in the area, as well as the opposing faction. Keeps you on your toes. Trion did a excellent job.
- DC Universe: Who doesn’t want to be a student of Superman, and have their own super powers? The game sounds awesome right? It is. Being your own superhero is as fun as it sounds in this great title by Sony Online Entertainment. Not only do you have heroes versus villians, you have dungeons that end in battles against your favorite heroes and villians of the DC universe. Very easy to play, difficult to master
- Aion: The black sheep of this list, Aion is not usually mentioned in the same sentence as WoW. This was hyped up to be the Warcraft killer, but numerous bugs kept it from doing so. However, over the span of it’s lifetime, Aion has evolved into a truly great game. By adding flight, the overall fighting system can be changed into a totally new experience. Fighting while flying in PvP areas are just awesome and cannot be put into words. Any PvP fans should really check out this game.
Now it’s your turn. What is your favorite MMO? Do you agree with these points? If not, what are your opinions? Is there a game I didn’t put on the list that I should look into? Let me know.
