When I was first offered to preview Escape Doodland, I took one look at the game and said, “Yep, this is definitely the right game for me.” Developed by appSide Down and published by PlayWay S.A., Escape Doodland is a 2D action adventure casual indie game that after a successful Kickstarter, will be releasing in July 2018. I would like to take the time to thank the developers and the publishers for providing me with a free demo copy of the game to play, so that I could write a preview for the game.
One of the biggest things that caught my attention about Escape Doodland was in fact the graphics. I do love the doodle graphic style. It reminded me of games like “Doodle Jump” or “Ballpoint Universe” and so I really appreciate the art style. One of the main reasons I love the art style is because the game is difficult, but you can overlook the difficulty of the game because of it’s fun graphics.
Speaking of difficulty, the game only offers two difficulties which is hard and harder. Don’t be alarm though, because even though the difficulties are hard and harder, the hard difficulty is not too hard. To be honest, it’s more like your normal mode. However, harder on the other hand, is in fact harder than the hard difficulty. So, it’s not like “hard” is normal and “harder” is hard. No hard is normal and harder is in fact harder as it is a little brutal sometimes.
The game starts off and you are running from a worm like creature who is trying to eat your little doodler guy – who I have personally named Alfonso…no this is not his name it’s just what I like to call him. As he doesn’t have a name. – Using the keyboard, as there are no controller settings [at least not yet] you must run away from the creature before he eats you. Although you are running from the creature, you do have the option of using fart power. The fart powers that you have are, the ability to propel yourself a little further ahead, farting to jump and even farting in the creature’s face to stun him at least once.
However, there is a limit to how many times you can use your “gassy” powers, and to replenish the power you must collect matches. Personally, I would have like to be able to collect cans of beans to keep with the running of the gas jokes, but I can see why you do collect matches. One of the reasons is because you set your gas on fire to use your abilities. The other is because one of the collectibles for the levels are green beans that are spread throughout the level. You collect enough of them and it causes you to gain gold beans at the end of the level. Collecting two green beans gives you one gold bean, four green beans gives you two gold beans, and eight green beans gives you three gold beans. You can then use these beans to purchase items and/or characters in the shop.
The levels are long and in the hard difficulty it does offer checkpoints. You also do get three lives, as well as additional lives (up to a maximum of three) as you cross checkpoints. However, in the harder version of the game there are no checkpoints and you only have the one life, so if you make a mistake you must start all the way over from the beginning of the level.
As I was only able to play the demo of the game, there were only five levels in the game. However, the full version of the game will have up to 10 levels in the game. There will also be an online multi-player mode that will offer five more skills for you to upgrade to fight amongst other players. As the multiplayer mode was not available in the demo, I am speculating that it will probably run similar that to the challenges in “Rayman’s Legend” when you race against others to get the best time. The game does also look like it is going to have steam achievements, although there is no indication on how many achievements there will be, and there was no indication on if the game will also be using the trading cards feature.
Overall, I did have a lot of fun with Escape Doodland and am looking forward to it’s release in July. I would definitely recommend picking it up, as it is a very fun and entertaining game. I may be childish at heart, but I just can’t stop laughing over the fart abilities, so if you have a sense of humor this is a game right up your alley. The game will be releasing only on Steam with it’s price to be announced.
