Sign-ups for an alpha test of Doom‘s multiplayer mode are now live, though not just anyone can register.
As revealed during QuakeCon’s opening ceremony in July, the alpha is a separate test from the beta, the latter of which will be open to those who preordered Wolfenstein: The New Order. This is described as “a series of development-driven tests designed to stress test the game’s dedicated server infrastructure in a real-world consumer environment.”
As such, the contents of the alpha are fairly limited–there’s only one map (Heatwave) and one mode (6v6 team deathmatch). There are six weapons and two pieces of equipment (listed below), and just one power weapon (which kills enemies in a single hit and can be used to see through walls). There’s also only one Revenant, a form you can transform into that provides you with a jetpack and dual rocket launchers for a limited time. You can assume this form by being the first to reach the Demon Rune.
Weapons
- Vortex Rifle
- Super Shotgun
- Repeater
- Rocket Launcher
- Static Cannon
- Plasma Rifle
Equipment Items
- Personal Teleporter
- Frag Grenade
Whereas access to the closed beta is guaranteed for those who preordered The New Order, only a limited pool of people will get into the alpha, but you’ll still need to have preordered to have a chance.
If you’ve redeemed your Doom beta code previously, you’re already entered for a shot at alpha access. Those who haven’t can head to the official Doom website, select their platform preference (PC, Xbox One, and PS4), and redeem their code. No schedule for the alpha (or the beta, for that matter) has been announced.
Doom is slated for launch in spring 2016. Publisher Bethesda expects its multiplayer component will be able to compete with other online shooters because it offers a different sort of experience.
