RPG games in the vain of Divinity: Original Sin were my jam when I was younger. Games like Baulder’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape took up plenty of my childhood gaming hours. When I had the opportunity to play a game like these as an adult lazily on my couch with controller in hand I was excited.
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is revised edition for the console. You play as source hunters, either by yourself or co-op with a friend. The game begins with you investigating a murder in the town of Cyseal, although that is just the introduction. There is a much bigger threat out there that puts more than the town of Cyseal in danger.
The game has an overall serious tone with some humor mixed in; although I thought the humor was either hit or miss. The game would have been just fine if the humor was left out. The dialogue is well written and fully voice acted, and the game is filled with interesting characters that fits the extensive story.
Like any proper RPG you roleplay through dialogue, thus having your missions outcomes differ depending on your choices.
The one thing that stood out to me in this game is the fact that the game doesn’t stick you with a base class that you are stuck in. Having selectable perks allows you to create your character how you want, and if you so choose to – go beyond the classic core classes we all know and love in Fantasy games.
I had a bit of the struggle with the combat as it felt a bit slow for my taste. I have played a ton of Jrpgs and turn based strategy games and I greatly enjoy these genres, but I honestly felt that this game would have been much better if the combat was real time. With that being said I did like how the environment was somewhat interactive. Setting an oil slick on fire will burn any enemies standing within the spill. This adds a bit of a tactical dimension not usually found in most current RPGs.
The visuals are wonderful and full of color. The particle effects and lightning stand out the most, and the camera can be rotated fully rotated so you can always get a good line of sight, regardless of what the environment is.
The gameplay on a controller was welcoming as well. Larian Studios did a good job implementing an old school keyboard and mouse game type to a gamepad. The game utilizes radial menus and tooltips to help keep the controls simple and effective.
Overall
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is worth your money. I honestly prefer to play the game vo-op on the couch with my wife, as its funny to make our characters argue. Larian Studios did a great job porting this from PC to console. With updated graphics, fully-voice acted dialogue and an expansive story you will put a ton of hours into this game.
