The following game, “Death or Treat,” was provided to me from thedailygamepad.net and was given to thedailygamepad.net for free by the developers and publishers of the game. I would like to thank the developers and publishers on behalf of thedailygamepad.net for providing a free copy of the game to play for this video and for review.

In this Live stream, Ready Sets Gaming plays Death or Treat on PC and then writes a review for it.

The Halloween spirit has vanished! Play as Scary and assist him in saving HallowTown. “Death or Treat” is a hack-and-slash 2D action-rogue-lite with handpainted environments and traditional animation. Explore all of the worlds and use various weapons and talents to destroy hordes of opponents.

Overall, I really do love the game because I am a huge fan of roguelike games. So when a roguelike that was Halloween-based without all of the horror elements was introduced back in May of this year, I was all for it. I originally received the game back in August, and when I played it, I fell in love with it, despite it having some performance issues. I knew that I would revisit it around the Halloween season. With the hope that those issues would be fixed.

After waiting two months to play, I fired the game back up again, and although it is still fun to play, it doesn’t look like the developers have improved some of the performance issues. In fact, it doesn’t look like the developers are doing much for the game at all. It’s like they released it, and that was it. I will say that the controls are pretty solid, and that is a plus. My only issue with the game is that if there are a lot of enemies on the screen, the game will lag, and it’s very noticeable. Lagging in roguelikes can make or break you and can be what causes you to die. It’s not only that the game lags, but it also lags the inputs as well.

I think that if the developers took the time to fix those performance issues, the game could switch from a mixed review on Steam to a positive one. Overall, the game is fun, and it is an alternative to a horror game if you’re not into horror games. If you would like to play Death or Treat for yourself, you can do so on PC and macOS via Steam. The game is currently on sale for $5.96 USD up until November 2, 2023 but then goes back to it’s original price of $14.90 USD.

She has been gaming for 30+ years; and feels that a lot of indie games go back to the games that she grew up with and aren't afraid to think outside of the box to make a game. It is because of this thought process that she prefers to play a majority of indie titles, but still likes to play Triple-A titles and Retro games too. She enjoys searching through itch.io platform and looking for games that are stream friendly, and then playing them on stream to get them the exposure they may not be getting. Some of her favorite game genres include Platformers, Puzzlers, Role-Playing and she's recently developed a loved for Shmups.
