Downloadable remake of classic action game in development at Hunted studio InXile Entertainment.
At the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, a remake of Broderbund Software’s 1983 platformer Lode Runner was announced. Today, another classic from the once-mighty, now-defunct studio has been unveiled: Choplifter, the airborne action game that first debuted on the Apple II in 1982.
The remake of Choplifter, titled Choplifter HD, will come courtesy of InXile Entertainment, the developer behind the 2005 remake of another 1980s classic, The Bard’s Tale, and the forthcoming fantasy action game Hunted: The Demon’s Forge. According to the Newport Beach, California-based studio, the game will see players assume the role of a pilot for the elite, international helicopter rescue team C.H.O.P.R. (Coordinated Helicopter Operations, Preservation and Rescue).
The original Choplifter had just a single setting where players picked up hostages while dodging enemy fire from jets and tanks. Choplifter HD will feature several helicopters to use in 20 missions, ranging from military prisoner extraction to rescuing survivors from biological weapon hot zones. As the name implies, it will also have high-definition graphics.
Choplifter HD is due out this fall as a digital download for the PC and PlayStation Network. (No Xbox Live version was mentioned.) GameSpot will have more information on the title as it becomes available.
