Developed and published by Fairy Forest, The Tower of Beatrice is an indie point and click puzzle game that combines all types of puzzle elements and does so in a decent way. I will admit I do love a good puzzle game from time to time. Something that can offer a good challenge is even better. However, before I begin this review, I would like to thank Fairy Forest for providing me with a free copy of The Tower of Beatrice. It is because of them that I can write this review for your reading enjoyment.
You start off the game by receiving a letter that tells you that you must go into the witch’s tower to obtain the book at the top and simply bring it down. Once you retrieve the book you are to give the book to the mysterious person requesting it who will then give you gold in return for the book. They give you a levitation potion since the door is locked and up to the top of the tower you go. Only once you get inside you find out that it is Beatrice, the witch of the tower who has tricked you into going up her tower to get her book. The only way to escape the tower is by solving all the puzzles in the room until you descend to the bottom of the tower.
There is a total of six different rooms that you must go through, before you can escape the tower with Beatrice’s book. Each room has roughly ten puzzles in the room, where one usually is a hidden object puzzles and then the others are a variety of puzzles. For the most part to solve the puzzles, you are going to have to pay close attention to detail, because sometimes you may miss items that were hidden in plain sight. I will admit there is a lot of reading in the game as well, and although some of the dialogue comes off a little corny at times, you are going to want to read all of it, as it will also offer insights to puzzles.
However, if you happen to get stuck the game does offer you a feature to look up hints. One thing, I would have liked to see when it came to the hints, is that you had a limit on how many of them you could use. For example, if you only get five times to use the hint button and if you use them all then you have no more hints until the next room, as a reward if you don’t use any hints then you would be giving an additional hint upon entering the next level. I say this because it would have added more of a challenge to the game. I was able to push the hint button a lot and sometimes I did not even attempt to solve puzzles that I was stomp with, I just hit the hint button. So, having that option would be awesome.
The game does offer achievements for those who are into the achievement collecting. The game offers thirteen different achievements to find throughout the game. However, for those of you who enjoy collecting trading cards, The Tower of Beatrice does not offer that feature. Overall, I thought that The Tower of Beatrice was a pretty good puzzle game. It kept me entertained and I found the puzzles very satisfying. Again, would love the ability to use the hint button decrease to add more of a challenge, but besides that I would recommend it. If you would like to play The Tower of Beatrice for yourself, you can do so by purchasing it on Steam for $5.99 USD. If you would like to try it before you buy it, there is also the option of downloading a demo of the game as well.
