2K Games and Gearbox acknowledge post-apocalyptic shooter sequel in development, planned for release in fiscal year beginning April 2012.

Yesterday, Eurogamer cited a source close to Borderlands 2 for news that the game was in fact in development, with an announcement “soon.” That “soon” may as well have been “imminent,” as 2K Games and Gearbox today confirmed Borderlands 2 is in the works for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Set for release during Take-Two Interactive’s next fiscal year (April 2012 through March 2013), Borderlands 2 will have new versions of just about everything: character classes, enemies, weapons, equipment, skills, and sections of Pandora to explore. 2K is also touting “an ambitiously crafted story,” though the only thing more specific offered was that it will involve secrets being revealed and mysteries being escalated.

More specifics about Borderlands 2 should be revealed soon, with “soon” meaning at Gamescom in Cologne August 17-21, and Penny Arcade Expo, which runs August 26-28 in Seattle, Washington.
