Iron Galaxy Studios bringing first-person shooter to Sony’s handheld next year.

Gearbox Software’s well-received 2012 first-person shooter Borderlands 2 will arrive on the PlayStation Vita in 2014, Sony, Gearbox, and 2K announced today at Gamescom.

According to Gearbox Software product manager Adam Fletcher, in the past year the studio has been “inundated” with emails, tweets, and forum posts asking for a PS Vita version of the game.

“You spoke, we listened,” Fletcher said.

Borderlands 2 for PS Vita is a collaborative effort between 2K, Sony, and Iron Galaxy Studios, the independent developer being fighting game Divekick.

The PS Vita version of Borderlands 2 will feature “all the unique benefits” of the portable, Fletcher said. It is not clear if any of the Borderlands 2 downloadable content will be available for the PS Vita version.

Speaking at indie game event Rezzed in July 2012, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said he wanted to see Borderlands 2 on the PS Vita.

“One of the things I wish Sony would do is get behind Borderlands, because I’d love to see a Vita version of the game,” he said at the time. “I want to be able to have the character I’m working on with my PS3, and then when I’m on the road with my Vita I can just keep developing that same character because it exists on the cloud somewhere.”

Sony announced a price cut for the PS Vita today. Both the 3G and Wi-Fi models are now available for $200.
