Anyone worried that Bungie would make you start over with a new character in Destiny‘s upcoming sequel can breathe a sigh of relief. The developer has confirmed that your current Destiny character progress will carry forward to Destiny 2, which publisher Activision announced back in November.
“The idea is that the Guardian you have created is something you can bring along with you on that adventure,” Bungie’s David “DeeJ” Dague explained to IGN. “If you take a look at the way people have played other games for a long period of time, they’ve had a relationship with the same character for a very long time.”
Though Dague was willing to confirm that your Destiny character progression will move forward to Destiny 2, he was less forthcoming with other details about the project, as you might expect. He wouldn’t say anything about the current status of the game or an anticipated release window.
However, he did tease: “I’ve seen new concept art, I’ve seen new exotic weapons up on people’s screens…it’s a lot of fun to walk around the studio, because there’s always somebody thinking about the next place you’ll go, the next enemy you’ll fight, the next thing that you’ll earn for doing those things.”
Destiny’s universe will grow tomorrow, December 9, when Bungie releases the game’s first expansion, The Dark Below. It raises the game’s level cap, introduces new maps, and adds more weapons and items to the mix. Following The Dark Below will be Destiny’s second add-on, House of Wolves, which we don’t know much about whatsoever.
Bungie has teased that it has “dozens and dozens” of ideas for new Destiny content, including potentially an officially supported racing mode, though it remains to be see what kind of new experiences the developer will bring to bear with new Destiny DLC or in Destiny 2.
