Before Activision enlisted Sledgehammer Games to help develop Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the studio was working on a third-person Call of Duty game set during the Vietnam War. Now, we know what that game could have looked like, thanks to some newly discovered pieces of concept art from prolific artist Eddie Del Rio.
According to IGN, the game was going for a “darker, more twisted tone.” The concept art shows a Vietcong soldier about to decapitate an American fighter (above), a burning cargo plane, and a Cambodian village separated by a massive gulch. Check out the images on Del Rio’s website. Del Rio most recently contributed to the new Godzilla movie and Chris Roberts’ upcoming PC space sim Star Citizen.
Sledgehammer Games said this year that this untitled Call of Duty game was going to focus on a “secret war” in Cambodia and Laos. The studio spent about half a year on the game and the developer was apparently “really getting into the story.” The game, which was going to feature sections in underground tunnels and had a Dead Space vibe, was even playable.
But Sledgehammer Games eventually moved on to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and now their latest project, the future-focused Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
