During a BioWare Retrospective panel at GDC Europe, studio founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk revealed some quirky memories and bits of trivia as they looked back upon the development of the Baldur’s Gate franchise. They first discussed their background as doctors, and joked that if they didn’t make it in videogames, then medicine was a good safety net to fall back on. Zeschuk joked, “Nobody likes a creative doctor, so we decided to go into a field that we can put our creative energies into.”
For publishing their first game, Shattered Steel, Muzyka noted, “We initially pitched Shattered Steel to the ten best and brightest publishers at the time, and I think of those ten, none are currently in business.” Zeschuk then quickly interjected, “Actually, there’s one: Electronic Arts.” Their nearby EA handler smiled after that clarification.
