Recording technology for next-generation console to be restricted to paying members.

The Xbox One’s Game DVR feature, which allows players to record game footage and share it with friends, will only be available to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

As spotted by One Hit Pixel, the Xbox Live features page shows that users will need to have a Gold subscription to use Game DVR, as well as Skype, SmartMatch, and OneGuide, among other features.

An Xbox Live Gold subscription is available for $60 per year. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, “Yes, Game DVR is a feature of Xbox Live Gold.”

Microsoft recently confirmed that the Xbox One’s Game DVR will record footage in 720p at 30 fps, below the 1080p 60fps that many titles will output at.

It is not clear if competitor Sony will require users hold a PlayStation Plus subscription to take advantage of the PlayStation 4’s similar “Share” functionality.

The Xbox One and PS4 launch later this year.
