This week’s issue of Famitsu revealed that Spike and Chunsoft, two mid-size game publishers in Japan that have both been subsidiaries of Asian IT firm DWANGO, will be merging together into a single outfit, the latest in what’s become a long stream of mergers in the consolidating Japanese game industry.
The new outfit, termed Spike Chunsoft, was painted as a marriage of convenience by the heads of both companies. “Starting one or two years ago, we’ve had a drive to look overseas, while Spike has wanted to expand on its mobile operations,” Chunsoft head Koichi Nakamura told Famitsu. “Spike has a pipeline overseas, while we have a lot of experience in mobile, so it was a simple step from there to say ‘Let’s join together.'”
