In yet another World War 2 Fps shooter for the PC, Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad offers a lot of what you already seen in most shooters around, however it adds a few details to the playing field. As you will already know of the theme its based off some events of WW2. You this time have the choice of playing as a Russian, or a German Soldier. You are given two scenarios in the single player sections. As always of today’s Shooter is expected is the single-player is a slight warm up for the multiplayer experience. So for this review I am going to bench slightly towards the multi-player as it has more to discuss.
Starting off you can only play in the German scenario, started in boot camp, given a lecture and shoved with a few gauntlet pushes to progress on the field. The narrator telling both as all of this was given in a good dose, I got used to the single player, the story was told as if I was watching the history channel, then soon finding myself in the online side. Now you are asking what stands this shooter out from the heap that seem to build on the same style. Its creativity in mechanics. The First person cover system is and was something I always felt should be placed into shooters such as this game as you are pushed against heavy weapon fire and well Tripwire gave what I thought inside of my head was needed. The presence of destroyed buildings and destructible bits and pieces here and there, the game offers a nice layout. Online offers also what you expect from games such as Battlefield, plenty of weaponry to fill those cravings of power, and range. There are units in which that are broken up to avoid over baring on the other team, Long range such as Elite Riflemen ,and mid range rifle specialists are brought into play. It is nice that they paced the teams so no one can have all snipers and overpower the odds. In a game such as this you will not be able to play like its a Arcade style shooter like Call of Duty. If you do so, you will get overwhelmed and taken down in 2 shots. Its a game that requires pace and timing. Unnoticeable bugs were even present for us, aside from slight memory leaks here and there.
Death is fast and frequent in Red Orchestra 2. While playing with the tank it requires those who specialize in Simulators to get the hang of this hog on the field.
In Closing:
With a Linear Single-player, we would highly recommend this game to those who love huge open multi-player battlefields to fire into, with plenty of cover, weapons, and detail to explore. We are extremely open to say this game is great, but for those who expect a casual experience you will be cut short and held back a bit. Detail to the movements down to the combat is very well placed. The cover system we can not express enough is well balanced in such scenarios, with things as heavy firefights.
As we feel this will be a big hit with a smaller group, we think its worth a shot to suggest it to your friends to play with as some team mates who do not communicate with you, will make the battle end short.
