Many state that RTS does not belong on console platforms, due to not having the full range control that a mouse has. Shame on them to assume it would never work. Under Siege is a interesting breed of RTS, where alot of free range of games such as Dota (some mod for Warcraft 3 that got popular, bleh) which spawned games such as League of Legends. Now it is to be learned that sometimes the best of a game is what matters, and this game offers alot of comfort food for the soul for many RTS games to come.
The story takes place in a steam punk meets mid evil style landscape, where it was told in paper puppets, giving a plot that you would expect from most rts games where there is a struggle, you must meet the demands, and explore the world of Under Siege. In single player you follow three heroes named, Eirik, Asgeir, and Kari. Among exploring, the combat gives the game a fantastic progression system which I will talk about later on.
Gameplay is straight forward, easy to hop into and understand. you give commands with one simple button ( Square) as well as have macros for units with the directional pad. Also included and some sort of landmark the PS Move can be used with this offering that point and click set up. While alot of PS3 users do not own a Move yet, it is nice to see some options for the game as well as a wide range of creative juices flowing in the title. Most interesting to note as you fight, your units gain exp and level, building strength and well offer that Dota I have mentioned before. I like the fact that I do not have to sit there and have to build up materials and just go straight into the game and over come the horde armies. The storyline is again somewhat sidetracked and you only obtain it within every scenario completion. The multiplayer with all the added units is freaking fun and challenging!
The Editor is really fun to play around with and I felt like this was like creating a movie and have the placed units as the cast, all somehow in a certain spot that I wanted them to be within, carrying out their goals. While some not think of it, this can actually give you a detailed and well produced editor for a RTS, granted most give you alot of sha-bang.
Closing Thoughts:
While this game was in a somewhat long production, it is give and proven to me that RTS games can be for consoles after that age old flame war. Games are games people it does not matter where you play them as long as you have fun. The game was well put together, aside from a slightly lacking storyline, the game acts in a unit for the key elements, good game play, good controls, and smooth transaction of competitive online. It is worth it for PS3 owners to get this game if you enjoy a good RTS and DOTA like game.
Over all we give this game a: 9.7
+ Easy to understand controls, great for new players to RTS
+ Awesome Multi-player
+ Editor is top notch
– Story is the same old same old
