After many months of rumors about a so-called PlayStation Phone, Sony Ericsson confirmed the Xperia Play in February. The phone, which is already available elsewhere in the world, will finally debut in the United States with Verizon Wireless on May 26.
Pre-orders for the device will begin this Thursday, May 19, for $199.99. It carries the PlayStation Certified branding, a phrase that indicates it’s capable of delivering a “PlayStation quality experience.” The Xperia Play’s most noteworthy feature is its slide-out, PlayStation-style controller, seen above.
It will come pre-loaded with a number of games — Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Crash Bandicoot, Star Battalion, Asphalt 6, and Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior will all be available on the device when it’s first purchased. As it runs on Android, there should be no shortage of other games to check out, too, and we’ve already seen what it can do with an emulator installed.
