Gamers have been suffering through the PlayStation Network outage for more than two weeks. It’s prevented them from playing games online, purchasing content on the PlayStation Store (a particularly big issue for PSP Go owners), and doing anything else that requires a PSN connection. Developers and publishers have been impacted as well, and while most have declined to provide any specifics on what effect the downtime has had, Capcom’s Christian Svensson has opened up about how much money the company is losing as a result.
Responding to a Capcom forum thread about the hackers who attacked PSN (which caused Sony to take the service offline to address its security issues), Svensson, a senior vice president at Capcom, said, “I’m frustrated and upset by it for a number of reasons. As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can’t do… and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation store and that I can’t do right now.
“On a related note, as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.”
