The continued maturation of the videogame industry has brought with it one rather controversial side effect for RPGs fans: The desire by developers to retool their games so that they appeal to as broad an audience as possible. Tactics Ogre director Hiroshi Minagawa is taking the opposite approach though; choosing to acknowledge that strategy RPGs are a niche genre while doing his best to please the original fans.
We recently traveled to Tokyo to discuss the remake with Minagawa, which is due out in North America next February. He talks about designing the new CHARIOT system; working with the original game’s director Yasumi Matsuno and whether or not he might eventually revisit Vagrant Story.
