Indie Games Winter Uprising

The Indie Games Winter Uprising, a group promotional effort from the Xbox 360 indie community, was meant to be a strong, unified message of quality. Unfortunately, delays and other setbacks have plagued the effort, making it more of a whimper than a bang. Though each of the games was targeted for the first week of December, only nine of the fourteen titles are currently available. The other five (Cthulu Saves the World, Alpha Squad, Aphelion Episode 2, Zombies & Pterodactyls, and Rickenbacker vs the Aliens) are rushing to come out before January.

The cross-promotion hoped to spur sales by offering a glut of games at low prices, but like release dates, it’s seen mixed results. Organizer Robert Boyd told Edge that Epic Dungeon has been the biggest success, selling over 6,000 copies in its first 10 days and rocketing to the top of the 360 Indie listings. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the game ends up selling 50-100,000 copies over its lifetime,” he said.

But Epic Dungeon, a classically styled rogue-like, was the first game out of the gate and cost only a dollar. Break Limit, by comparison, has only sold about 400 copies, and other games have sold even less. We didn’t hear data on some sequels to popular Indie games, like the just-launched Soulcaster II and Crossfire 2, possibly because sales information hasn’t been released yet.
