Yes, Microsoft did in fact have some kind of Gears of War-related announcement planned for tonight’s Spike TV VGAs. The bad news is it’s been canceled.
Such has been declared by Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb on his blog. “I have just learned of a decision to postpone our planned Gears of War news from Epic Games for the Spike Video Game Awards this weekend,” Hryb writes. “I wanted to share this with you and let you know that while these are never easy decisions, we can tell you that what we have to share for the franchise in 2011 will definitely be worth the wait and we look forward to working with our partner at Spike on sharing this world premier news when it is ready.”
Back in November, a rumor floated that Microsoft was going to reveal some kind of Gears of War game with Kinect compatibility at the awards show — either a whole new Gears built for Kinect, or possibly the first or second game retrofitted with Kinect controls. Cliff Bleszinski himself tweeted that Gears 3 would not include Kinect controls, although he did reveal to GameTrailers that something was planned for the VGAs and it wasn’t “what you’re expecting.”
