Psychonauts wasn’t a huge financial success story when it was released, but now word-of-mouth may have traveled enough to make a sequel worth a try. Speaking to PSM3 (via CVG), Double Fine head Tim Schafer expressed interest in a sequel and hope that it could find success now that buzz has built around the original game.
“I’m ready to do it,” he said. “I’d love to do it. It’s really a question of getting a publisher who’s interested in doing it.” He says the game has “gotten into the hands of a lot of people, through being two dollars on Steam for a while, and being pirated. So it’s gotten out there. So if all these people were going to buy the sequel it would be a big hit.”
That means a new Psychonauts relies on a publisher, but take heart. Double Fine has had no problem finding publishers for at least two of their smaller downloadable titles, under the company’s new strategy. If they decide to make another Psychonauts, especially as a bite-sized downloadable game, we can’t imagine they’ll have a hard time finding someone to publish it.
