Dragon Star Varnir is the newest JRPG to be published and developed by Idea Factory. I have played quite a few JRPG developed and published by Idea Factory in the past and thought that there were well done and thought out. Therefore, when we were offered the free copy review of Dragon Star Varnir for PC, I was happy to go ahead and do gameplay footage of the game as well as write a small review of the game. Before I begin I would like to thank Idea Factory for providing us here at thedailygamepad.net —formerly known as thedailygamepad.com— with a free review copy of Dragon Star Varnir.
Dragon Star Varnir is a starts off with Zephy, a Knight of Requiem who is sworn to destroy dragons and witches. Zephy finds himself in quite a situation when he comes up against a dragon that he knows he can’t defeat and succumbs to the dragon. As this occurs, Minessa and Karikaro, two witches approach and defeat the dragon. Seeing that Zephy is a Knight of Requiem and may know where their friend Laponette is being kept, the young witch Minessa — against Karikaro’s wishes — decides to bring Zephy from the brink of death by giving him dragon blood. After doing this Zephy comes to and Minessa and Karikaro’s take him as a hostage until they find their friend, but then something happens that makes Zephy question everything he has known up until now.
When it comes to the gameplay of the game it is essentially a turn-based game as well as a dungeon crawler. You have to go around and collect items to make your characters stronger. In addition to this, when you are fighting in battle each character has the ability to devour a creature to get their shard, which grants them additional abilities. Another one of the things I would love to mention is after all of the games that I have played from Idea Factory, this is one of the first games that I have seen where there is actually a male character as a playable character and not just an NPC type character. Like he is actually manageable, and an active member of the party.
The controls were both pretty good and that is using both controller and Keyboard and Mouse. I never thought I would play a JRPG with keyboard and mouse, and only tried it out for the review, but I can honestly say there wasn’t much of a difference. I personally prefer to play JRPG or even RPG’s with the controller. So when it comes to controls it’s based on your own preference.
If you would like to play Dragon Star Varnir for yourself you can pick it up on Steam, Fanatical and Humble Bundle for $49.99 USD or $44.99 USD if you are a humble bundle monthly sub and on PlayStation 4 for $59.99 USD.
