Old ideas now-a-days are a fresh thing. Let’s take the Rogue genre, back then it was lightly used, and was a niche thing. Now it is a global leader in innovation. With such games like Binding of Issac, Enter the Gungeon, and many others. Super Mutant Alien Assault works along the idea of intense action like from Smash TV, adds cool as hell looking aliens to shoot down and plenty of weapons to smack them senseless with. The game is still in early access. So many things might be adjusted, or changed in the near future. The story of the game is as followed: Three fleets of spaceships flee a doomed Earth carrying the last humans in cryostasis. Pursued by aliens, it’s up to the lowly security droids to save humanity. Taking up arms solo or with a friend, you must dance with death in a brutal and addictive arcade platformer shooter inspired by Super Crate Box and stuffed to the brim with unlockables.Fight through rapid fire single screen levels each with a random combination of platform layout, objective, vending machines and enemies. Dodge and weave amongst the aliens to stay alive but don’t leave them standing too long or the ship’s radiation will mutate them into bigger, nastier versions. Only by unlocking and mastering the wild variety of weapons, explosives, special abilities, defense moves and perks can you hope to survive across all three galaxies, rid your ship of the mutant menace and save the oblivious humans.

screenshot6Super Mutant Alien Assault is simple in nature, but has light complexities like enemy variation, weapons and power ups. Every play through is constant of arranged levels that generate in tons of different patterns, with objectives being flipping every so often. Objectives like,  making sure the level of air or pressure is stable is part of the chaos in the game. Every four or so levels,  you fight a boss that is a semi larger variant of the enemies you already fight. Their only difference, is their attack patterns are different causing a more dangerous environment to run around in. Enemies vary from flying and semi harmless to acid spitting annoying ooze monsters.

screenshot8Unlocks are a plentiful thing in this game. Visuals, and music are all gravy over a pillow mount of mash potatoes. Chip tunes are always the that thing that feels vintage. Weapons, new types of enemies. All sorts of progression from simply running through the game continuous times. The reward is repeated sessions. Where sure you lost, but now you also learned to do better. As well as deal with stronger enemies. On a ongoing reward as you play. I like the fact I played, got used to enemies they tacked on more challenge so it gave me a bit more to master as I adventure into the stages. Adding more depth and flavor as I went on it. It takes the normal simple nature of arcade games, and turns it up to fifty. Sure for some one it could be a balance issue if players are not used to arcade games, but this game seemingly is made for fans or veterans to the genre of rogue like. Or the concept of well if your playing this long and unlocking things, you should be toned by now. I found it frantic fun to be always move about.

screenshot5The weapons in the game are well a… blast to use. You have many items like a shotgun, a secondary pistol, so if you run out of your primary, rocket launcher, a ak47, a sniper rifle, and an grenade launcher. Each having their own play style and handle as each would suggest. The ak47 having a kick to it but offering moderate damage. The grenade you have to cock it at the right angle and land it. Speaking of grenade you do get a nice pile of those too. You can cook them, toss em, and even prepare them, such as normal grenade, and stuff like C4. My personal favorite being the C4. Weapons all handle great. Each having a nice use, and everyone will find one they enjoy quite easily.

In Closing:

Super Mutant Alien Assault is one heck of a thrill ride. Keep going until you burn out. Then rushing back at the fray again. It keeps you going hard at the stages. Blending a retro vibe with some smart modern twang to the arsenal of gameplay. Its vibe screams retro, but is a fresh, and awesome experience every time you play it. Get it!
