The real-time strategy genre, as a complex PC mainstay, has seen its share of difficulties making the jump to a more limited console interface. For Ronimo Games, the answer in Swords & Soldiers was to strip the interface down — way down. The result is a title with charm and personality to spare, but it’s just a little too simple for its own good.

Instead of a sweeping 3D plane, your battlefield is a flat, straight line. Units always move in one direction (right) at a constant pace, and start that journey the moment they’re built. Gold is gathered for units but mines never run out, and upgrades come quick and early to each mission. Mana for spells is usually plentiful, and refills quickly. Paths split in two once in a while, but always rejoin the main path.
